National Tequila Day!

Happy National Tequila Day! Our head mixologist, Alex Renshaw, is quite the fan of high end tequila’s, so we decided to find out just why he likes this spirit so much, and learn a bit more about his top choices of this special spirit that we carry.

First, a little tip about tequila: There are three basic types of tequila (certain brands have more types); Blanco, Respado and Anejo.  Blanco means white, so this is a lighter colored tequila with an earthy character due to the region in which the agaves are harvested. Respado refers to the amount of time (between two to twelve months) the tequila has rested to produce the smoothness and complexity within it. Anejo, or old, gets its name from the amount of time the tequila is aged, usually from one to three years, and the longer its ages, the smoother it becomes.

Tequila OCHO– this is Alex’s first pick and most loved. An estate-grown, 100% Blue Agave Tequila range, OCHO is produced as a collaboration between Tomas Estes (the man credited with bringing the first bottle of Tequila to Europe) and well known distillers, the Camarena family. One really unique fact about OCHO is that it bears the first ever ‘Tequila vintage’.

Siete Leguas– named after renowned revolutionary Pancho Villa’s steed, Seven Leagues (Leguas). This tequila is made at one of the oldest distilleries in Mexico and has more than fifty years of experience in making tequila.

Excellia– the name means excellence, but can also be interpreted as ‘ex-cellar’ which refers to the aging cellars in which it gains its brandy and sweet wine personalities, something rather unique to this brand. An interesting fact about the name is that it is a feminine term, as tequila (like most of the language) is a masculine term in Spanish.

Chinaco– named after Chinaco Warriors of the War of Reform and French Intervention in the 1800’s. This tequila is 100% agave and is double distilled to “achieve the exceptionally smooth and legendary flavor”. This brand prides itself in its originality of the distilling location as well as it’s embodiment of Mexico and age-old tradition.
